Twist and tale for TRPs
A slight twist in the storyline is guaranteed to increase viewership and small screen directors will vouch for this fact. Encashing on this, they are inserting twists and turns to their storylines every week to attract more eyeballs.
Producer Rajan Shahi feels that it is the need of the hour. "Every show has a strategic sequence called as the high point where the story can be given a dramatic twist. The idea is to woo not only the regular viewers but also others. In my show, Amrit Manthan, I altered a sequence in which the male protagonist instead marrying the elder sister is shown to marry the younger one . That created a lot of buzz and scaled the TRP's."
In his other show, Ye Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, which revolves around the relation between the two families, Shahi has infused an incident sequence on the occasion of protagonist Akshara's (played by Hina Khan) birthday. In the serial Na Bole Tum... Na Maine Kuch Kaha, the special episode showed protagonist Megha's (who is shown to be a widow) father-in-law discovering his son's diary, which states that he wanted Megha to remarry in case of his demise. This made the show the most talked about recently.
A drastic change in the storyline increases curiosity and adds a surprise element, says Raakesh Paswan, producer of the series Afsar Bitiya. "Twists and turns in the plot make the viewers ponder over the plot. It is also a good way to startle the audience." Sometimes these gimmicks highlight a social cause. "The main protagonist in my show, who is a block development officer, tries to expose the ill elements of the society," adds Paswan.
But according to actor Vikas Bhalla who plays Veer in the show Uttaran, the main purpose of adding a special sequence with twists is definitely TRP generation. "This trick seems to be working in daily shows. Plus these episodes are specially targeted towards the weekends which leaves the audience curious till Monday," he says.
