KARACHI – Despite the tall claims made by the Sindh government about giving a free hand to the law enforcement agencies to control violence in the economic nerve centre of the country, at least 11 more people, including a close relative of outlawed People’s Amn Committee (PAC) leader Ahmed Ali Magsi, were gunned down in separate incidents on Friday.
In the Balochpara area of PIB Colony, Pir Dad (40), the maternal uncle of Ahmed Ali Magsi, was killed when armed men sprayed a volley of bullets at his car. He was rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition where he succumbed to his wounds.
After the incident, tension engulfed the locality where the routine commercial activities were partially suspended. Police officials said the victim was a maternal uncle of Ahmed Ali Magsi, who is accused of having connections with the Lyari gangsters and have also been nominated in the cases for the killings of several workers and supporters of the MQM in the PIB Colony and other areas.
Since the killing of MQM Sector Committee member Mansoor Mukhtar, the Magsi group has gunned down several other MQM men and law enforces. However, the police are now expecting a strong reaction from the Magsi group over the assassination of Pir Dad. A heave contingent of Rangers and police were deployed in the locality to control any possible clash between the Magsi group and MQM. No case was registered for the killing of Magsi’s maternal uncle till filing of this report.
Meanwhile, three persons were killed in the Garden area. In first the first incident, Ayub Baloch, 27, was shot dead and his friend-cum-relative Nadeem Baloch, 30, was injured when two armed bike riders targeted them as they were parking their car near Gilani Masjid at Ghulam Hussain Qasim Road.
SHO Mutahir Hussain, who was later suspended over the unending series of targeted killings within his jurisdiction, said the victims hailed from Balochistan and arrived in a city to visit their relatives. Moreover, Razzak Baloch was gunned down in Hassan Lashkari village, while armed assailant killed an unidentified man on Nishtar Road. A police constable Abdul Qayyum, 45, was shot dead his house and his 23-year-old neighbour Omar Bahadur was injured when at least two killers opened fire at them. He was a resident of Pathan Colony. Police said the deceased was posted at the SITE-A Section Police Station and the motive behind the incident had not been ascertained yet.
Separately, a labourer hailing from Swat was gunned down in another act of targeted killing in the Bijli Nagar area of Orangi Town. The victim Shujaat, 45, who had arrived in the metropolis two months, was shot dead at bus stop.
25-year-old Mirza Adeel Baig was shot dead near his house in Sector 35-C Korangi No 6, while another man, identified as Asif Baloch, was gunned down near his house in the Jahangir Road area within the precincts of Jamshed Quarter Police Station. A police officer said initial investigation suggested that the deceased was a drug-peddler and also had criminal record, adding that he was killed by his own companions. After the murder of Asif Baloch, angry people staged a demonstration, but police reached the spot and disperse the protesters.
Meanwhile, unidentified killers shot dead a young man, identified as Saleem, in Liaquatabad No 8. Separately, a body of a young man was found from the Dhobi Ghaat area, which falls within the precincts of Pak Colony Police station. Police officials said they would be able to ascertain the motive behind the incident after the identification of the victim whose body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
They further said the victim’s hands and legs were tied with ropes, adding that he received a bullet on his head and appears to be Bengali.
Meanwhile, a divisional engineer Syed Abbas Ali Zaidi, 43, at the telephone exchange in Lyari, who was injured in a firing near Lea Market on Thursday, succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital. His injured companion Sagheer Kareem, 30, was still admitted at the hospital.
