Pakistan reopened GLOCs for regional peace, stability: Raja
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Wednesday said that Pakistan reopened the Ground Lines of Communications (GLOCs) for Nato supplies for regional peace and stability in accordance with national interests.

Talking to Cameron Munter, the outgoing US ambassador who paid a farewell call on him at the PM House, the prime minister said Pakistan was ready to facilitate the transition process in Afghanistan as a responsible member of the international community and a neighbour who stands to directly benefit depending upon how the situation unfolds in that country.

He said that Pakistan supported an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned inclusive peace and reconciliation process and extended its unstinted support to the international efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan. “Despite our own economic constraints, the government has announced financial assistance for Afghanistan to the tune of $20 million,” he added.

Raja Pervaiz said that despite recent challenges in bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States, it was a matter of satisfaction that things were back on track, thanks to multi-layered engagement between the Pakistani and US leaderships. “We need to look ahead and move forward in building a durable and mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries and their peoples based on mutual respect and mutual interest,” he said.

The prime minister said the strategic partnership between Washington and Islamabad manifested the depth of bilateral relations. He said that Pakistan looked forward to more US cooperation in the fields of energy generation, infrastructure development, water management, agriculture and human development. He said that under its policy of ‘trade not aid’, the Pakistan government hoped the Obama administration would work with Congress for greater market access with preferential tariff.

Raja Pervaiz said Pakistan was a frontline state against the war on terror and had suffered more losses than any other country in the world. He said that Pakistan expected its allies to also respect its red lines. He said that the government had taken effective measures on the counter-IED issue during the last few months to control the illegal flow of IED ingredients into Afghanistan.

The prime minister appreciated the efforts of Cameron Munter in spearheading Pakistan-US relations during challenging times and expressed his best wishes for the outgoing ambassador. Munter thanked the government and the people of Pakistan for the excellent hospitality extended to him during his stay in the country. He said the relationship between Pakistan and the United States was too vital to be left at the mercy of irritants. He said he thoroughly enjoyed his stay in Pakistan and found the people hospitable and its culture beautiful and diverse. He said that he would use his good offices for encouraging private investors to invest in the energy sector.

Earlier, a delegation of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) led by its Chairman Mohsin Aziz also called on the prime minister and discussed problems being faced by the textile industry.

The prime minister shared with them the news regarding the enactment of a bill by the EU Parliament giving increased market access to Pakistani exports. He constituted a committee consisting of secretary finance, secretary petroleum and Gohar Ejaz, a representative of APTMA, to come up with a solution to import gas on a fast-track basis within three to six months to meet the total requirements of the country. He said the textile industry was very important and was indeed the backbone of the economy with more than 50 percent share in the country’s total export volume.

The prime minister directed the secretary finance to look into the problems pertaining to the credit availability at affordable rates. He assured the delegation that the problem of energy shortage would be resolved as the industry was providing millions of jobs to the people around the country. The APTMA chairman and other members of the delegation congratulated the PM on assuming the high office.
